Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.
When down in the laundry room I heard such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Peeking around the corner with care, was a little Lab pup, with yellow hair. I squinted and couldn’t believe my eyes, that good ‘ol Saint Nick, what a clever disguise. This yellow little puppy curled up next to my head, while I wait for the screams from the children in bed. Lab puppy ‘o pups’ cute bundle of joy, was top of the list, with no other man made toy. Catching the faint whispers that comforted me this night, Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

Giving Thanks for such a giving life.

Last night I sat down and thought about things in my life that I’m thankful for. We’ve raised Labs for over 25 years now and have had our own brand of dog food, JaxMax, for 8 years. Every time I answer the phone and talk with a new, excited family, and they are looking to add a Lab as a new family member; I’m struck by how special that moment is for them. Their excitement, concerns, and the shear responsibility of the situation fall around me like leaves on a crisp fall day. To witness that and experience the moment with them is something I am thankful for.

Every day I meet with future or past customers of ours; they are genuine, friendly and take time to chat with me. Over the tiny moments, that grow into days, which turn into weeks, months and eventually years; those once strangers are now friends. Someone in which I can have a common conversation with or discuss today’s’ topics. And every once in a while I meet a person that stands out from the rest. A real hero. We had such a person in our midst. He wasn’t around nearly long enough. I would have to say, even though it wasn’t pleasant losing Todd; just having spent time with him was something I will eternally be grateful for. And I’m thankful for that.

And then there is the puppy. That one puppy that steals your heart, along with your socks, shoes and underwear; yes, that youthful little puppy that will mature into a stoic family pet. The one true being that loves you unconditionally. A Lab. With so many awesome characteristics and cherished moments. I am thankful for my Lab.

My hope for you is this; a Thanksgiving filled with great memories, much time with family and friends; of course, the Lab at our feet the whole time. He is loyal and patient, or he’s just waiting to clean up whatever is dropped on the floor. Nevertheless, be thankful!

How to select a Labrador Retriever Breeder

Having been a Labrador retriever breeder for over 20 years, there are a few hints you will need to know when looking for a breeder. If the breeder talks about “championships”, that keyword means one of two things, either hyper from being bred for field trial, or bred for looks, also known as a show lab. Since those labs are bred for a specific purpose, and no where in that terminology does it talk about family, you are probably getting a hyper lab. If you find a breeder that focuses on health and temperament, you are much better off. You can always check out my website http://www.labpups.com, as we do breed lab puppies for families.

Choosing your new Lab puppy

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is, “How do you choose?”. My response to this question would be to follow your breeder’s advice, he/she should help you. Since lab puppies in a litter tend to be very consistent from one to the next, any puppy would be a fantastic companion. The personality of your pup will develop in your home environment. You can’t really see any lasting personality at this age. Going by the strong traits of the parents is more predictable. Your breeder should know his or her linage that well. I suggest asking them, what traits they’ve noticed.
